Limerick Hurler Kyle Hayes Due In Court Following Dangerous Driving Charge

Limerick hurler Kyle Hayes is to appear in court later this month after being charged with dangerous driving.

The five time All Ireland winner was arrested in Mallow, Cork on suspicion of committing a road traffic offence. Hayes was taken to the local garda station, after being pulled over for allegedly driving at more than 150kmh in a 100kmh speed zone. 

He was subsequently charged with dangerous driving, contrary to Section 53 of the Road Traffic Act 1961, before being granted station bail.

Hayes will appear before Mallow District Court later this month. This offence can lead to a fine or up to six months imprisonment on summary conviction.

“Gardaí in Mallow arrested a man for an alleged road traffic offence on Sunday, July 14", a garda spokesperson said. “The man (20s) has since been charged in relation to the incident and is due to appear at Mallow District Court at a later date. As this matter is now before the courts there is no further information available. Investigations are ongoing". 

This arrest comes just four months after Kyle Hayes avoided prison after being convicted of a violent disorder at the Limerick nightclub Icon, which left a young carpenter with serious facial injuries.

Hayes' sentence hearing was told by the presiding judge that the four time All Star winner had also threatened the use of violence on the nightclub's dancefloor, which he described as "extremely dangerous".

Hayes was handed a two year suspended sentence, and ordered to pay the victim €10,000 in compensation. Half of this was to be paid within four weeks of the court hearing, with the remainder to be paid by September 30.  

The hurler's latest arrest for dangerous driving came a week after Limerick were beaten by Cork in the All Ireland Senior Hurling semi final at Croke Park on a 1-28 to 0-29 scoreline, ending the Treaty County's quest for five All Ireland wins in a row. 

The Limerick County Board are yet to comment on the matter at the time of writing.
