Gardaí Issue Fresh Road Safety Warning Ahead Of Easter Weekend

Gardaí have shared a fresh warning to road users ahead of this Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

This warning was issued about the increased risk of being involved in a fatal or serious road traffic collision over this weekend. According to the latest figures, road deaths in the first quarter of this year are at their highest in over a decade, with 55 people losing their lives in road incidents, and increase of 13 from the previous year. 

In light of this, Gardaí have launched a campaign for the enforcement of road safety, which began at 7am yesterday. 

According to the Roads Policing Unit, the aim of this campaign is  "the protection of vulnerable road users and the reduction in fatal and serious collisions through high-visibility roads policing and enforcement".

Gardaí have issued this warning, with more and more people expected to take to the roads over this Easter Weekend, in one of the busiest periods for Irish roads.

They have also stated that the risk of fatal or serious injury is at it highest between 3pm and 6pm over this Easter Bank Holiday Bank Holiday Weekend, with the Garda enforcement operation targeting speeding, use of mobile phones while driving, distracted driving, intoxicated driving and seatbelt offences.

Motorists have been warned that there is a strong possibility that they may be stopped, and tested for alcohol and drug use over the weekend. The campaign will also raise awareness of driving on the road on the morning after a night out.
